I'm gonna break character for a minute, since most of you are probably Substack migrants... I'm still active on that app, and have a bit of a following, but I'm disillusioned with people who would initially sub/interact with me a lot but after I help promote them and they get bigger, they'd just... not necessarily ghost me or unsub me, but... become pompous assholes? I'm all for a community of creatives and supporting another's work, paying it forward if you will. But this behavior is just overall sad. I'm not naive and know that those types of people exist, but it just sucks to be in the middle of it, y'know? Anyway, that's all. Thank you for being here 💜

Really sorry to hear that. I’ve developed a close group there, and I prune it occasionally. Has been online in 6 months? Unsubscribe.
Thanks for posting this. I experienced something similar when I first joined Substack, where some of the people I thought were genuine and would stick around ended up blocking and muting me, without an explanation. I tried not to take it personally, but when you go from chatting with them daily and being told they they "love your writing," to pretty much being shunned, that's kinda hard not to.

You gotta learn to have thick skin. Writing has never been an easy task. One of the hard things that will follow you anywhere is losing contact with people you thought highly of, often without reason. It’s the same with writing in the real world.

I actually told a young poet, just a few hours ago, that “we are visceral creatures, savage, and pissy” when talking about attitudes lol
I'm sorry you've been going through it with these creators The part that really drives me nuts: there's genuinely no reason we can't all win. The creative space isn't a pie that runs out at a party. There will be more pies, more guests, and more parties. And the systems churn what should be a community into a competition So as frustrating as pompous assholes can be, I’ll still try to pay it forward, and the right people will eventually stay at the table 💜

This is exactly the problem. People without experience in the creative fields just accept what service offers and tells them. But the truth is, this is not a Zero-Sum game. They treat it like it is, because if users act like it is, they spend more. Time. Cash. Everything. When you think and the space as a library, the monetization looks very different.
It’s amusing to watch people you supported early in their social media writing journey find a bit of success and then act like you were never there. I’m not too bitter about it, though; I actually enjoy seeing someone’s true character come through. What is it they say? There are plenty of fish in the sea.

After hearing similar stories on a number of social sites since 2006, I think I figured out one of the problems that causes this. I’m writing an article now. 😁👊🏼
