Fiction writers, I have a question — is it really so important to write in the first-person POV? I see everywhere that readers now prefer this POV over third-person.

I see mainly people who don't care about the POV so long as the story is good, or they prefer the 3rd person, so I think you're safe to write in whichever POV you like
It depends on the story you want to tell honestly. Mainly readers now prefer first person because they just project themselves onto the character. But, don’t be influenced by this: Focus on which one of the persons helps you deliver your idea, your message. Even third person can have the same “flavour”, especially if you use the third limited pov. You can also write first person and then if it doesn’t work, write it on the third person. This way you can understand the character’s mind better.

I don't see it as important which POV your write from. Personally, I like writing in third and first person, but I prefer reading in third person. I typically use first person as a way for the reader to connect with the protagonist more, whereas third (i think) is better for telling a story
Honestly I agree with most of what everyone else says; it is one of those things that people have their own preference on what to read and write, but they do have their own unique uses.

I don't know where you're seeing this (but I am old and live under a rock away from most of the internet) but as others have said, it largely depends on the story you tell. I have on series in third person, another in first, and there is no way I could swap the two and tell the same stories. Do you want to tell a story from one person's POV and limit what readers know about what everyone else is doing? First person might work. If you want to explore other character's POV, third person is better.
