Character building. It’s one of my favorite parts of writing, even when it’s a secondary character who won’t have a huge role in the story, but his backstory set off the plot events with the main character and antagonist. I love building pieces that will show through without saying it directly. I’m working on the “Martha Holmes Mysteries” sequel for one of my mystery series. Novellas are harder than novels, I find. Same with short stories. The word space you have to tell the story is lessened incredibly. It’s been fun to play with, though.

Yes, character building is one of my favorites too! It's what really got me into writing: writing stories and backstories for my characters

I love it as well, my issue is that the random characters that pop into my head exist in totally different genres than what I’m actually working on. For example, I’m writing a story set in Midgard County, West Virginia. Suddenly, out of no where, there’s Dr. Regan Quinn, field biologist, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. So, instead of writing rural fantasy, I’m debating whether this new character is a two-fisted pulp heroine or the protagonist in a series of cozy British Murder Mysteries.
