I guess the obvious would be to come up with music/sound to go with a story/words or story/words to go with music/sound? But how to know what goes with what?

I'm facing a similar task. I am trying to integrate some music and songs into the background atmosphere f my Forever:NEON series. I have resorted to studying screenplays and live theater structuring and it is eyeopening. Speculating aloud, maybe a good practice would be something like taking a new view of everyday circumstances, events, scenes, people, etc, and imagining if these had background music... what?
