I've been writing a lot on my computer recently because I'm working on my submission fo my city's literary yearbook and since it's a short story I didn't bother getting an extra notebook. It's been an incredibly frustrating experience. I've felt like everything I've learned over the last year had vanished, becahse I sat there and couldn't get a word out most of the time. Yesterday evening, I took ten minutes before going to bed to write on the next chapter of my serial, which I always write into a notebook first. And suddenly, it flowed again. Writer's block gone in an instant. Simply because I'm less critical when I write by hand. I know it's not the final thing. I know it will be rewritten. It feels more like writing what the characters are telling me into a diary. Refining comes later. Long story short, go get a notebook and write by hand if you're feeling blocked.

Funny how the notebook used to be the default way to do it, and now it's almost become novelty. I used to use notebooks (or loose paper) all the time. Now I've gotten so accustomed to the computer - convenience. But you're exactly right. It is a different feel with the notebook/paper. Richer, deeper, visceral.
I love to write in a notebook first as I know it will develop later when typed up. I suppose also the fact that I am so slow at typing that the story doesn't flow fast enough onto the screen. In a notebook, the words come out at the same time as the thought, although sometimes the writing quality can deteriorate when done too fast.
in contrast, i have to have a combination of the two! i write out however much i get in one sitting on the computer, editing as i go, and then i print it. i take a pen to that to further edit, and then eventually i re-type the entire thing. i can organize it to my liking that way. :)
