So I guess it’s been around for a few years, but has anyone head of the music app, Mixtube? I just found it the other day and, in case you’re not familiar, it’s completely FREE, no annoying adds, and available offline. You can navigate other apps or whatever on your phone, and the music keeps playing. No interruptions whatsoever. You can even import your playlists from YT. So yeah, it’s great! My question, though, is how are they making a profit, if everything’s free? It almost feels too good to be true. And a related question: why are people willing to pay for Spotify or other digital platforms for ad-free content, given the alternative? I’m seriously curious about all of this!

That’s super cool, I love the movement towards free software! It’s one of the main goals for the app I’m working on. But I have no idea how they’re making profit haha
Though in terms of your second question, I think it’s because we simply aren’t motivated enough to become aware of the alternative. Like I used TurboTax for years, bc it was just the default, until they upcharged too hard this year and I switched to FreeTaxUsa 🤷
Yea I didn’t even consider to look again for that option until you shared it! I used to love free Pandora before it got chock full of ads
But yes, I agree that it's cool that some folks are making their apps free. It just makes me suspicious because most people (though I know there are probably some exceptions,) are going to want to make a profit. It can't be entirely selfless, right? The only thing I can think of is maybe they're selling your data..
You’re right to be suspicious! Given the eldritch horror that is modern Terms of Use contracts, they sneak so much into it. But some really are that selfless, like there was a fully free pranayama breathing app that I used for a while. I just avoid putting anything too sensitive in there, and you’ll be good!
