I see the difference between fiction and non-fiction in large part as the difference between internal and external consistency. For fiction to work I think it needs internal consistency. Characters, plot development, and world building serve the story better if they are smoothly connected and consistent--internally networked. For non-fiction, the central thesis or point (even if its just one-damn-thing-after-another history) needs a connection to other things beyond its pages. This could be other books, facts, events, ideas, people, and so on. Any takers?
