For me fantasy seemed over-codified by the late 1980s. It seems to be mostly living on in the massive rehashing of already rehashed motifs. The sad thing for me was that I liked most of the basic stuff...so I detoured through hard sci-fi and came out working on a mix of hard fantasy and soft Sci fi.
