why do you ignore our pain so you can protect your peace?
why can you only see what has already happened?
how are you blind to today’s injustices?
because people are dying
they just aren’t your people
so I guess it’s ok to be indifferent
our suffering
the antonym of peaceful, the epitome of loud
is made quiet for your peace of mind
“tactless, brash, uncivilized, rude”
we’ve heard the things you whisper
too cowardly to shout
you say we’re different
and I guess that’s true
we’d never ignore your pain
just because you're you
but I guess it’s ok to be indifferent
it hasn’t reached you yet
with its aching finality, forced vulnerability
across an ocean, you really don’t care
and why should you
it’s not your family being shot
your children starving
friends crushed under piles of rubble
entire existences destroyed by bombs
when you hit that red button
sitting in your security
removed by your apathy
from there, I suppose it doesn’t quite seem like human lives
casulties of your own creation
so I guess it’s ok to be indifferent
justifying genocide
on the basis of moral ideals
the irony is bitter, practically acidic
you preach your superior traits, far better than ours
but lack basic empathy
how could you even try to see it from our perspective
when we’re just so, well, different
alien
unhuman
but othering us will not erase us
yet I guess it’s ok to be indifferent
and in 100 years
when this will all just be a lesson in the history books
a warning for the future
your grandchildren will sit there
and wonder
why no one did anything
when the atrocities and indignities were so obvious
so unfair
but for now
I guess it’s ok to be indifferent
