Weekly Eddy
Letter-writing prompt, a sneak peak at June's Mollusk Mail, and my new current read!
The Weekly Eddy is my little mid-week routine where we take a look at the three near constants in my life: Mail Time, Craft Corner, and What I’m Reading. Please hit the follow button now so you don’t miss next Wednesday’s Weekly Eddy.
Mail Time!
Every Wednesday, I write a very short letter to one friend or family member. This routine is new to me, and it’s not something I thought I would set out to do this year. However, I’m hoping this routine will help me feel closer to my friends and family who are so far flung, and I’m hoping it will make me a better writer. My letters so far have been rambling. So I’m going to use this section of the Weekly Eddy to share a writing prompt that we can all use in our next letters. If you are also trying to send more snail mail this year or even want to join me in my Letter Writing Wednesdays routine, please drop a comment below. I’d love to hear what you’re writing or even see your stationery!
Today, I’m writing a letter to a member of my book club, and I’m using my letter-writing prompt from last week. Check last week’s Eddy to see that prompt. I’m especially excited about today’s stationery, seen below. I just love a fancy little envelope! I’ve had this set of Griffin and Sabine notecards in my collection for probably 20 years, so I think it’s high time they are getting mailed and fulfilling their destiny.
This week’s writing prompt: Reminisce with your letter recipient about the last meal you shared with them. Fondly recall the details of the restaurant, waiter, menu, occasion, or the process of cooking the meal with them, the recipe, the ingredients, etc. If you can’t recall a shared meal with them, tell them about the best thing you ate this week; maybe it was a cozy meal you cooked yourself, a pastry from the corner bakery, or just a quick bite you grabbed on the go. Ask them in turn what was the best thing they ate this week, and maybe you’ll get a letter back!
Craft Corner
Here’s where I share literally anything I created in the past week. I’m using the word “craft” very loosely, as this section could include a collage or a poem or well anything really... I can see a time in the future when it may even include something I baked. Though I threw out my failed sourdough starter last week, so that may be a long time coming. My plan is not to paint myself into a corner here and just let this be the space where I can share what I’m creating, in whatever shape or form it takes.
This week, I’ve been gathering, cutting, and creating all the little bits and pieces going into the collage kits for the upcoming Mollusk Mail Club shipments. But I want to keep those collage kits a secret. I’ve already shared the postcard print and sticker that will be included, so the collage kit contents will be the main surprise. Instead, I want to share the first glimpse of the postcard for the June shipment of Mollusk Mail Club. The postcard is still very much a work in progress, but I’m happy with the direction it’s taking. As a teenager in the early 2000s, my entire bedroom was covered in stars, moons, and suns. It was all very whimsigoth and I miss that room sometimes with its blue blow-up chair, its handmade sun and moon curtains, and its giant folded star lamp hanging from the ceiling. As I was designing this card, I really felt that old aesthetic calling to me again. I’m not running out to buy another blow-up chair, but I can create art that little teenage Sarah would have wanted to tack to her giant corkboard.
I finished last week’s current read, Princess of Blood by Sarah Hawley, yesterday, which I absolutely loved, even though the cliffhanger was brutal and promises that book 3 will be a painful read. And I am now faced with the daunting task of picking my next book. My book club is currently reading The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow, but unfortunately for me, I am 13th in line for a copy from my library. So while I am impatiently waiting for that library hold to come in, I need to select a new read. Now, I see you there thinking, uh, shouldn’t she just be picking up Wuthering Heights again? And to that I say, sshhhhhhhh.
After much deliberation, I decided to pick up my ARC of The Book Witch by Meg Shaffer, which will be available April 7th. It’s still too early to tell how I’ll like this book, but considering the premise is right up my alley, a witch that can jump into books?! That’s a dream! And considering I am a big fan of previous Meg Shaffer books, such as The Lost Story, I have high hopes for this one.
If you’d like to support my art and writing, you can do so via my Ko-fi account. Thank you for being here and please consider tagging me if I’ve inspired you to make something. I’d love to see it!
P.S. Obligatory post script to remind you that I started a mail club called the Mollusk Mail Club! As a member of the Mollusk Mail Club, you will receive quarterly shipments containing a postcard print, a sticker, a personal note, and at least one other fun thing. This quarter’s fun thing is a little collage kit featuring ephemera created and curated by me! Sign ups close on Feb 28th!
