The Soulmate Theory
Why science says you have a soulmate
I, as well as many others, have always adored the idea of soul mates. Just the thought that something greater than us has tied our souls with another and you get your whole life to find and connect with people that are cosmically connected to you is exhilarating.
All that is beautiful but at the end of the day it doesn’t make sense. Even if there is a higher power (which I kind of doubt but a story for another time) why would they take the time to tie every single one of our beings to another person/people. It seems like a huge waste of time when there is probably bigger fish to fry when running an entire universe.
Even with those reservations in mind I still can’t shake the idea that soulmates exist. I mean have you ever met someone and you immediately hit it off and it feels like you have known them for years. That can’t be nothing. So I turned to one of the only things I know to be true, science.
The first law of thermodynamics
It feels weird I know but just walk with me for a second. The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, simply converted from form to form. Weather you believe our souls were crafted by God or the stars one thing remains the same, our souls are just energy. From the calmness of walking on a beach at sunset to feeling your eyes start to water at a sad movie. It is all just the energy of our souls bouncing around our body giving us life. When that energy runs out, our bodies rot and return to the earth, recycled into whatever mother nature decides to create next. It doesn’t seem like a stretch that the same thing happens with our souls. When humans die, the energy inside of us doesn’t get destroyed, it gets recycled.
The energy that flows through us is tainted, for better or worse, by the souls it has powered before. When you meet someone and feel that undeniable cosmic connection, it could be that your spirits knew each other in another life, and have finally found their ways back together. It could also be that in another life, your souls were one and were split into two bodies by death. The latter theory is my favorite. I find it very romantic to think that you could be going about your life meet someone who literally another piece of your soul.
Maybe you have already met your soulmate(s), if so I am so happy for you and hope it is everything you could possibly want. But even if you haven’t I hope you can find solace in this random idea that I have been ruminating on and know that somewhere out there is someone who fits in the empty spot you have been guarding. And when the time finally comes that you get to meet your soulmate, I hope it feels epic.
