Skin Deep: A Poem about Beauty
The last poem I posted on Substack

They say that Beauty
is only skin-deep.
But even skin itself is deeper
than the surface of the skin,
And there is no light within regardless,
where grayish organs invariably float,
wedged into a comfortable mess,
which prefers not to be disturbed.
I can’t help feeling, though,
that if you must dissect a person
to demonstrate
their lack of loveliness
by way of this inevitable humanity
within,
You were not really looking for it
in the first place.-Rachael Raine Rivers
