Carrot and Raisin Salad
a true story about grief and food preferences of chickens
I made
the salad on
your birthday after you
died. One small bowl, the same as at
Christmas.
No one
but you would eat
this mess, even though I
have seen "recipes" in a few
cookbooks.
Raisins.
Shredded carrots.
Mayonnaise. Mix it
all together. Recipes say
"sugar".
You said,
"No sugar", so
I left it out. Even
the chickens would not eat it. It's
for you.
Carrot and raisin salad is a real thing, and there was always one bowl for my father at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
Chickens will eat anything. They'll eat other chickens, and they don't always wait for the other chicken to die before they get started. (Living on a farm was educational. I miss it every day.) They refused the carrot and raisin salad. They just glared at me and walked away.
