Box City WIP: Snippet #4

The interrogation continues the next day. After a couple hours of acting out an exhausting scene for the security cameras, Dima drives the performance home.

“What is it you want?” Says Dima.

“Hmmm. Well, I really have been wanting to read Lucy Falk’s new book,” Maura says, snarkily.

Dima sighs heavily, and stairs at Maura in question.

“Okay, you release me and leave me the fuck alone,” Maura says.

 “We can put on you probation for this crime, but we can’t leave you alone if you commit another offense.”

Maura, touches a finger to her lips and pretends to think long and hard.

“Okay, I’ll agree to that,” Maura says.

“I did seed on the border of Veronica and Box City.” Says Maura.

Maura describes the area where she seeded.

Dima looks into the camera and nods. A day later, techs find the seed bombs crumbled in the manicured grass, exactly where Maura told them they would be. She is released in the afternoon. Cal pics her up and drops her off outside the border at sunset. She walks with her legal belongings and Falk’s book in a sack. She arrive in Veronica as the sky becomes a deep blue.

Maura knocks on the door to their little cottage. Not long after, the door flings open, and Callie is pulling Maura into the warmly lit living space. Callie brings Maura into a long, tight hug. Maura’s eyes water a bit. Callie opens the space between them to get a good look at Maura.

“You’re not hurt?” Asks Callie.

“No, but they only fed me that liquid ‘nutrients’ shit.” Maura says, making a gagging expression.

Callie smiles amusedly.

“Okay, let’s get you some real food,” she says.
