Bad Luck

Fed a cat on the street yesterday
It started to follow me around
We went all around town
As I did my errands, I
Tripped over the curb twice
Almost got hit on the crosswalk
Black fur, green-gold eyes,
A long tail and a twitchy nose
To the laundromat, to the store
Lost a 20 to the washer
Didn’t have the nickel for a dry cycle
My favorite snack discontinued
“What a fine cat!”
“Well-behaved for a feline.”
The cat sits and watches, it
Doesn’t move unless I do
Back home now, and I
Burnt my microwave dinner
A pipe burst last night
Flooded my kitchen, pouring from the sink
My alarm didn’t go off this morning
Late to work, and it
Rained on the way home, so I
Fell up the stairs to my apartment
All the while, the cat followed
The one I found on the street
