Awakening is Not a Race
A poetic think-piece
Mourning is not a competition,
and awakening is not a race
But i can’t help but feel a deep sadness
At all those realizing “police brutality”
Is not a phenomenon made up by criminals.
When I take a look at those
Using pictures of that poor white man
To justify and demonstrate his “goodness”
His “harmlessness”
I wonder what the narrative would’ve been
Had he had a wider nose.
If he were dark skinned
And armed
Would we have assumed his kindness?
Would coworkers pop out of the blue
Loving on him?
Or would it be only our community.
Time and time again.
Mourning the child
Inside every man
