About that last Track
the little story behind the latest amateurly home-recorded piece of multitracked music
Apr 1, 2026
Hmm, maybe this is what I should've been doing, since this is primarily a site for writing, writers, and poetry writing writers, so might as well practice writing by telling of backgrounds.
As I've said a bunch of times, I really enjoy multitrack recording; you know, try to come up with different parts for the different instruments. See how it comes out. Except I never cared for reliance on drum machine drums. Always felt too confining. So a few years ago I got to wondering if I could learn drums well enough to make my own drum tracks. Started shopping around and holy fuck are drum kits expensive. But they have these cheap beginner-level electric kits, so that was my only option. I was surprised to find I really liked learning a little about drumming. Instead of taking online lessons beyond the bare bones basic basics I thought about setting up simple chord progressions (recorded using metronome) and try drumming to those.
And the last track I just posted is one of those. Actually many are those. You know, nothing fancy or virtuosic, just something to play with, like this one is just one chord progression, which I hear is a treacherous thing to attempt. But I like to try different guitar sounds and maybe try another drum track, etc. And this is the latest iteration. I will boldly prophesy that the chirpy hit-hat around 1:45 to around minute 2 need not be as piercing as I happen to think it turned out.
But maybe I shouldn't even be saying that stuff. Maybe this is one of the only corners not only of the internet but the entire universe where it feels one can let go, shrug off, that weight of obsessing over whether anything made is 'good' or 'good enough' yet. It's more like: this is how this particular thing happened to come out this time; or this is the stage this particular thing happens to Be for now. Yet who knows, how am I or anyone to know, what any given person out there will enjoy reading or hearing or looking at or experiencing?
So I guess the thing to do is toss it out here and move on to the next idea. The acoustic track was recorded direct into the unit, as were two electric guitar tracks. Seemed like lately the microphone wasn't getting a good signal so I imagined the unit might be fucked up; but this time, I don't know what I did, maybe jammed in just right, who knows; but it really picked up the amp nice and clear. So I made two guitar tracks that way.
Anyway, enough of that for now. Time to go write a story or two. Submit them to the Digests.
