A True Play
Sojourner “Hughes” Davidson
They say it was easier then
It’s a lie
Life has always been hard
In different ways
Yes
I may have been a child
But I was observant
I saw that death was real
And so was pain
I saw that you could say one thing
And do something
Entirely different
My little brain sparked
More fearsome than a giant
Taking in the world
With anguish
Delight was a play
I dressed up in
Every now and then
To distract from my knowledge
Anyway
Children grow
Into adults
When they do
Everyone finds the noticing
Less amazing
More annoying
And delight is hard to play
But not distraction
Distraction is everywhere
But mostly in our phones
And in the people who love
To close there ears and eyes
And spin around pointing
At the newest scapegoat
For today’s crimes
I try to unwind my delight
From distraction
It’s like untangling twinkly lights
I want to find the real joys of life
And discard the lies
They love to sell
